It seems I left out the fact that when this first happened I went immediatel to the ER and they did put me on steroids and Flonase - neither of which did any good. My Favorite Nominee: Losing My Religion, R.E.M. It was overplayed, but if you listen to it now, it sounds almost fresh again. It really is just a good song.

Winner: Another Day in Paradise, Phil Collins. Preachy, annoying, and not even the best song from that Phil Collins album. (Actually, I just checked and sadly, it is. I despise "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven," and "I Wish It Would Rain" just sounds like a rip-off of "Wish You Were Here" with Clapton on guitar.)
My Favorite Nominee: Nothing Compares 2 U, Sinead O'Connor. Of the sappy, preachy, sad sack songs that were nominated this year, this is the one that's actually a good song. (Also, "U Can't Touch This" was nominated this year, but come on, man.)
My Favorite Single This Year: Enjoy the Silence, Depeche Mode. Now there's a love song.

Winner: Wind Beneath My Wings, Bette Midler. I hate this song, and my dad pissed me off by playing it at his wedding reception for his mother, which I specifically told him not to do because it was such a fucking cliche. He said he wouldn't; he did. Wow, my grandma must have been one of 10 million special woman so uniquely honored that year. It's the equivalent of buying your dad a tie on Father's Day.
My Favorite Nominee: The End of the Innocence, Don Henley. Chance is right on when he calls it deceptively angry. It adds some world-weariness on top of that, too. Beautiful song.
My Favorite Single That Year: A Little Respect, Erasure. I usually come out on the side of pop, I guess. Although besides the catchiness, I think the lyrics are beautiful. One of my all time favorite lyrics comes from this song: "What religion or reason could drive a man to forsake his lover?"

Winner: Don't Worry, Be Happy, Bobby McFerrin. I always liked this song, but it sure wasn't the best of the year. I think part of it was the novelty of McFerrin doing the whole thing a cappella. Which is admittedly neat.

One cold morning I had to walk to school. I had to walk to school quite often. The school was a short distance from our house as the crow flies, but I couldntake the shortest routeto school because that particular intersection didnt have a crossing guard. There were three streets to cross, only one of them was busy and and I was not allowed to cross that onewithout the crossing guard.

I have no idea what his name was, butthe crossing guardwas a big burly man with fuzzy dark hair and a mustache. He wore the same gray plaid jacket underneath his orange vest. I dont remember if he ever said anything to us kids as he led us back and forth across the street. I can still picture his face, but my guess is hes not around anymore.

On this particular cold morning, I arrived at the busy intersection and was dismayed to see that the crossing guard was no where to be seen. I was terrified. What if he didnt show up? What if I was stuck on that side of the street all day? I would get in trouble for not getting to school on time. I would miss Ms. Dienstman singing Miss Lucy HadA Baby around the piano.

Then I noticed the donut shop across the street. A man sat near the window, sipping coffee and reading a newspaper. He wore a gray plaid jacket. And that hair was unmistakable. IT WAS HIM. Surely he would see me over here, on the other side of the moat. I waved again. It was cold, and the warm lights of the donut shop were almost too much to bear. Then a knight in shining armor arrived. Okay, it was more like a sixth grader with a Dungeons and Dragons Trapper Keeper, but he looked down and said Do you need help crossing the street?

I nodded, in awe of how tall and helpful thisman was.

He held out his hand. ll help you, he said.

I was a little nervous, because technically this guy was a stranger, and I am pretty sure he hadnt been to crossing guard training, but how the hell else was I going to get to school? I grabbed his hand. He bravely looked both ways and said, Come on! We ran across the street together.

Thank you, I said (At least I hope I said that).There ya go, he said, and like that, he was gone, his longer and stronger sixth grade legs zipping ahead to school. But I was safely across the street, and life could go on.

I have never forgotten his face. Sometimes when I am back in my hometown I will remember this story when I drive by that intersection. The donut shop where the crossing guard ignored my waves and cries is now a Great Harvest Bread Company.I wonder what became of my sixth-grade hero. I like to think he grew up to be a good guy, who has a son. He teaches his son to help other people, especially little kids and old ladies.

He probably has no memory of that morning, wherever he is. I guess its proof that little gestures can have a lifelong impact.

Researchers do not fully understand why antidepressants increase the risk of mortality in these patients. However their findings are statistically significant and show that these drugs do increase the risk of death in heart disease patients. Current and former heart disease patients should weigh the risks and benefits of antidepressants before using these medications.
